One Down, 161 To Go...

Highly original, that title...

A quickie today; pre-vacation, post-opening day, as the LadyMet family prepares to drive to VA for Busch Gardens. Yes, people, this is what you do when you have kids. Anyway, some thoughts:

Daniel Murphy. You are quickly proving the Ladies prescient in their adoration of you. Note to Reds broadcasters: it's Daniel, not Dennis. Someday, when he's in the Hall, you are going to be embarrassed by that mistake.

Gary Sheffield likes David Wright more than Jimmy Rollins.

Ryan Church is not giving up right field without a fight.

As a sign of respect, and a gift following his first official save as a Met, we will henceforth refer to K-Rod as Frankie, as he prefers. At least until he blows a few.

Danielle at The Wright Stuff has written a kick-ass guide to Citifield. Read it and you're good to go.

Johan. Our love grows stronger every day.

Hey, offense? This is what hitting with RISP looks like: 5-1 Mets over Reds. This is what it looks like without it: 2-1, Mets over Reds. We'll take the win, don't get us wrong. But let's not fall back into bad habits, OK?

Was it just us, or did Brett Myers' head look like it was going to pop like one of David Wright's bubbles during that loss Sunday nite?

Off days following opening day suck. Wonder what the gangstas are doing in Cincinnati today? Any ideas? What do people do in Cincinnati, anyway?

Comments section is open for business, give us your thoughts on these, and any other pressing topics you may have...

Kisses!

Mets Minituae

As spring training rolls to a close, and our Metsies are finally at full strength, we turn our attention to the truly important things about our team. The Ladies are content to leave the stats, lineup projections, rotation and bullpen concerns to those who are much smarter than us (Metsgeek and Amazin Avenue come immediately to mind, although there are many others) and will instead concentrate on the little things we have learned over the course of this very long spring training that make our beloveds the fine men they are. In no particular order, here you go:

Carlos Beltran is opening an academic/baseball academy in Puerto Rico.

David Wright paid for an Iraqi war veteran to fly to LA for the WBC semi finals.

Carlos Delgado has the cutest son ever!

Ryan Church is now slightly less wise.

J.J. Putz doesn't care how people pronounce his name. He loves a good, childish practical joke. Rapidly becoming LadyMet's favorite pitcher. (Besides, he let his wife pick the name of their new son - how does any woman not love that?)

Francisco Rodriguez does not want to be called K-Rod. Someone needs to inform the Mets and MLB of this.

Golf and pitchers do not mix.

Please note that all these fine tidbits are gleaned from various blogs/news sources, but LadyMet is far too lazy on this Sunday to link to all of them. She will now go back to arguing with hubby as to why the Mets will be fine in the offense department this year.

Till next time!

Monday, Monday...So Good To Me...

Bonus points if you can identify the song in the title of this post! Hint: You must be over the age of 30 to even have a chance at this...

Anyhoo, a warning to Port St Lucie residents - our very own Lady G is headed down there this weekend to provide John Maine with some encouragement and comfort- crosswords, fried okra (good luck getting THAT thru security, G!) and many hugs for our emo-ridden righty. We are looking forward to reports from her from- wait for it - the field!

Speaking of Lady G, she reports that Duaner "Wild Thing" Sanchez has signed a minor league deal with San Diego. We wish him nothing but good luck there, except when he pitches aganist us, naturally.

Just got thru reading Will Leitch's article on the Mets in NY Mag - now we're depressed. Thanks, Will.

On a positive note, while our stars have been off prancing around with the likes of Hanley Ramierz, Jimmy Rollins (shutter) and Derek Jeter, those left behind have been making good use of increased playing time. Nick Evans, in particular, looking to come out from under Daniel (Don't Call Me Dan) Murphy's shadow, has been tearing it up in spring training play, batting .325 with 10 rbbies. Maybe that kick in the butt from David Wright on Super Bowl Sunday is doing him some good. Ryan Church is looking like his pre-concussion self, hitting .314 and feeling good.

Later, gangstas!

Where, Oh Where Have Our Metsies Gone?

And it was all going so well...Spring Training was in full swing, our boys were slowly getting in their cuts, pitches and hunting practice, and then - they're gone. Just like that. Port St Lucie is left with a motley assortment of prospects, career minor leaguers and Bob, the groundskeeper. Not to mention those on the big league roster too injured or small-time for the WBC, such as Johan (much to the chagrin of Hugo Chavez), Ryan Church, Brian Schneider and our resident expert in self-flagellation, Metallica John Maine.

This means the Ladies' attention is split. Do we focus our attention on the gangstas left in Jerry's camp? Or do we hunt down our boys on their various teams, to make sure they are not being unduly influenced by consorting with the enemy (Jose, stay FAR away from Tejada and Ramirez, OK?) Let's check in quickly with our travelers, then pop back in to PSL.

Team USA is having a love-fest. David Wright loves Derek Jeter, Chipper Jones loves David Wright. Even Jimmy Rollins and David Wright have buried the hatchet, at least for now, although Jeter better stay alert in the locker room. We wouldn't put it past Rollins to plant a smoke bomb in Wright's locker. Even David Letterman gets in on the romance, having the team read Thursday's Top Ten List. The Ladies are only mildly interested in the WBC; it is competitive baseball to watch but ehh...all we can say is if USA cannot beat Canada, don't come home (well, send DWright and J.J. home, the rest of you stay up there with the grizzlys)

Team DR with Jose and a couple of ex-Mets - Pedro (remember him?) and Moises Alou. The kissy-face with A-Rod and Jose is over, as A-Rod is out with an injury, and manager Felipe Alou has already screwed up, using Hanley Ramirez at SS instead of Jose in today's game against the Netherlands. The Marlin (a team known for their defense - not!) made an error in the first inning that allowed two runs, which were the deciding runs in DR's LOSS to the Dutch today. Yes, I said LOSS. The WBC world is rocked!

Now to the PR team with our Carloses, among others. Take care, boys, don't get hurt, we need you this year. And look after Alex Cora, our newest infielder, as we will need his glove when the inevitable Slappy McSlapperton injury occurs. Don't feel bad if you don't make it to the finals vs USA as we would hate to see the Mets' core playing each other.

Team Mexico - with Ollie - please lose early and often. Johan has more mentoring work to do with Ollie, and we need them back together in PSL.

Speaking of PSL, Johan's throwing schedule is back on track, and he is determined to open the season in Cinncinati, as befits an ace. Let him, Jerry. Please.
A word to Johnny Maine. Relax, dude. You'll be fine.
Injuries recently reported can be found here. Add Mike Pelfrey to the list, with a muscle strain. Wrap yourselves in bubble wrap, guys. As a matter of fact, the Ladies volunteer to fly down there and help with that process. A sacrifice, sure, but we're willing.

There is probably much more to report on, but LadyMet is exhausted by all the baseball after so many long, barren months. And since our spring training regimen consists of sitting in front of the computer reading Metsblog and eating peanuts, we're still a little out of shape.

A Day In The Life Of A Groundskeeper At Tradition Field

Hi all! Groundskeeper Bob here, keeping you Ladies filled in on all the happenings down here in beautiful Port St. Lucie. Since I am but a lowly field worker, most of the players, coaches and staff don't notice me much, which is how I am able to get some good inside info for you all.

Like today, for instance. Jose Reyes was just inside the clubhouse, screaming in Spanish about how he is now batting third, then he goes out and hits two home runs, one of them a grand slam. I'm thinking maybe the knowledge that his back-row ho did not have his baby, as was rumored, contributed to his power surge. (I know, I need to take a shower now, I went and linked to The Dirty)

Ryan Church is plotting revenge against Mike Francessa during his Tradition Field broadcast tomorrow. Ryan apparently has agreed to be on the radio show, after the war of words the two of them had earlier this year. Ryan was showing off the I (heart) NY T-shirt some alert fan sent him, and cackling about how he's gonna wear it tomorrow for the interview, while he was enlisting some teammates for pranks on Francessa, designed to torture him until he admits he was wrong about the whole thing. I can tell you, David Wright is one of the players involved, as he has his own grudge against the fat man.

Speaking of pranks, I can tell you that J.J. Putz is quite the jokester! He and fellow pitcher Tom Martin (I know, who??) attached their hunting rifle to my rake, and made me use it on the field. Very funny, guys, I'm still digging buckshot out of my shoes. Speaking of hunting, that wild boar they shot and served for lunch at the clubhouse to the players and staff had all of us puking within an hour. We saved some and served it to the Marlins today when they came for a game. Probably why we beat them 9-0. Btw, congrats to J.J. and his wife on the birth of their son, Joseph Ethan!

Putz' past and current teammate Sean Green cracked a fingernail while pitching yesterday. I heard Dan Wharthen yelling him afterwards, about how he needs to keep his nails short, and to stop with the airbrush designs . Seriously, I like the guy and all, but that's a little effeminate, no? Maybe it's the Curse of Heilman's Uniform Number that poor Sean was unlucky enough to get.

Finally, there's Jerry's cracked car windshield. The team is under the impression that a Marlin foul ball into the parking lot did it. All I'm saying is, has anyone seen Willie Randolph lately?

So that's today's update, Ladies. Please put my check in the mail ASAP, as I'm a little short this week. The Wilpons aren't the most solvent of employers right now!

Thanks - Bob

Man, It's Cold Up Here

We're baaack! Mickey sends his love to all gangstas out there, and special big kisses to Lady G for keeping us in the loop while LadyMet frolicked with Pooh and his friends.

Since the David Wright Girlfriend saga has been covered (really, too big a story to ignore, even from Fantasyland), let's get back to baseball, shall we?

Recent developments coming out of Camp Gangsta are shocking! Well, maybe not, compared to Camp Steriod over in Tampa. (Allow us to digress a moment - Yankee skipper Joe Girardi is giving his team of me-first, overpaid spoiled crybabies the day off from baseball and taking them on a field trip. That's right, they have been in camp all of five days, and Joe feels they need a break to go play billards. The whole team. Now, supporters can call this a team-building exercise, the Ladies call this rewarding bad behavior)

Anyway, Head Gangsta Jerry is looking to shake things up this year. Changing the lineup, perhaps? Reyes hitting third? An intriguing idea. He's got enough pop in his bat to drive in some serious runs, although he'll have to be careful not to run down Castillo on his way to third. Speaking of which, Castillo has been making all the right noises this spring. He's humble, owning up to his Little League performance of last year, and appears much healthier and lighter. Perhaps he's been on the David Wright Girlfriend diet (eat only greens, get your exercise chasing David all over the country).

On to pitching. Last year, speaking of the Met's pitching staff was enough to give LadyMet hives. This year, a different story.
J.J. Putz is a beast. He's also a character, and the Ladies look forward to many stories of clubhouse hi jinks. As if that weren't enough, he's a team first player, and doesn't mind setting up K-Rod. We see a Love List in your future, J.J.!
The starting rotation has more candidates than than the first round of American Idol. Beginning with Santana, natch, and on to Pelfrey, Ollie (Welcome back! Glad to see Bora$ let you come out to play), our boy Metallica John Maine, and a cast of thousands for the fifth spot. Freddy Garcia? Tim Redding? Jon Niece? Nice to have options!

The outfield is in a state of flux, but again, nice to have options. Although today, not so good to be Ryan Church. Gangsta Jerry is sticking it to our fav former National, by putting him on notice (though the media - really, Jerry?) that he may not be the full-time right fielder due to his lefty-hitting issues. Daniel (Don't call me Dan) Murphy will see the majority of playing time in left, leaving Fernando (The Stars Were Bright) Tatis to spell David Wright, Carlos Delgado and Ryan Church.

So the drama begins, and Jerry is stirring the pot. Plus, the team breaks up next week, as the WBC begins.

Baseball is back!!!

Spring Training - Week One

All Hail, the Big Donkey

The gangstas have only been at camp for a week and they have already picked their torture target for the spring. Pity poor Mike Pelfrey, the 6'7" newlywed and one-fifth of the starting rotation. He flipped a golf cart while playing with John Maine, Ryan Church and Brian Schneider and showed up for workouts the next day wearing this. Feel free to add your own punchline to this picture, it's too easy.

In David Wright news, he was cornered this week and asked for his reaction to the A-Rod fiasco. Oh, David, we feel your pain. Always trying so hard to do the right thing. Mr. Clean. Imagine his discomfort when asked to comment on the fall of one of the game's greatest players. Just listen here, and you can almost feel the sweat forming as our beloved tries to walk the fine line between defense of one of his heros, and condemnation.

On to the newbies. J.J. Putz has a nasty splitter, which even impresses the oh-so-cool, David Wright BFF bullpen catcher Dave Racaniello. J.J. Putz also has a sense of humor, as evidenced by his pie-in-the-face-on-live-TV of the lovely Kevin Burkhardt. The Ladies look forward to big things from Mr. Putz. (again, insert your own joke here)

Ryan Church. Mike Francessa. Mike, you're an idiot. And the Ladies don't listen to your show. So there.

Kisses till next time!

Christmas Gifts

Amazing how wishes sometimes come true! The Ladies received David Wright under the tree (alas, it was plastic and clothed, but we'll take what we can get) and then found this:

Merry Christmas!

For those astute readers, you may have noticed an addition to our contributors - the one and only Stars, from our fav Ladies Locker Room, will be adding her wit and wisdom to these hallowed pages. Welcome, Stars! The gangstas are pleased, they are tired of LadyMet's ramblings. Sean Avery tried out for the gig, seeing as he's unemployed, but his misogyny was just so 90's.
Just a quick note for this Christmas Eve. The Ladies have a wish list, and they would appreciate finding these items under the tree tomorrow morning. Gangstas, please take notes.

1. A picture of David Wright, shirtless. Nude would also be acceptable.

2. Ditto, John Maine.

3. Derek Lowe. (fully clothed, please)

4. A target for Jimmy Rollins' head.

5. Some new movies for the bus (see, gangstas, we're thinking of you! We know it gets boring)

6. Blue glitter pasties (if you don't know what we're talking about, you haven't been keeping up! It will all be explained in due time)

7. A clear head for Ryan Church

8. Second-half Carlos Delgado

9. A four hundred million-dollar implosion across town (that would be da bronx, natch)

10. A stellar year for rookie phenom Daniel Murphy

We don't ask for much. Off now to the sugar plums...

The Mets are a bad boyfriend

So the Ladies are reliving last years' spring training prediction by Carlos B (see post above) and the subsequent results of said prediction. The Ladies got to thinking about all the years the Mets were supposed to be great, even just good, and fell flat. And we were wondering why we love them anyway. They are, after all, like the bad-boy boyfriend you had in high school, who promised you a ring after graduation (a world series ring, possibly), that would lead to a house of your own (Citifield) and maybe a few kids (a decent farm system). Boyfriend would keep all his promises to be faithful and not tramp off with the town hussy. Then said boyfriend fired up his motorcycle and drove off, after leaving you with an unmentionable disease. Alas, we all know women just love a bad boy, one whose committment phobias are as big as his ego. Therefore, we have decided to accept our self-destructive tendencies and will be glued to the TV come April. Following is a list of things we rooted out as solid, healthy reasons to love our Mets: David Wright's ass. Jose Reyes' smile. Johan Santana's incredible gamemanship. Jerry Manuel's sound bites (see: title of this blog). Ryan Church's perseverance. David Wright's tongue. John Maine's love of Metallica. The bullpen's willingness to give a hand to the grounds crew (although they could have helped more by giving up fewer runs, but we're trying to be positive here). Joe Smith flipping off Cubs fans at Wrigley (Miss you, Joe!). Did I mention David Wright yet? Carlos y Carlos. And so much more... OK, we feel better now.
